Thirty-one healthcare lawsuits filed under the qui tam, or whistle-blower, provisions of the False Claims Act have been unsealed since April, according to a report by Mintz Levin's Health Care Enforcement Defense Group.
Here are five things to know about the recently unsealed cases.
1. Three of the unsealed complaints date back to 2010, and four were filed in 2012. The rest of the cases were filed in 2013 or later.
2. The federal government intervened, in whole or in part, in eight of the cases.
3. Fifteen of the recently unsealed cases involve both state and federal claims.
4. Nine of the cases involve kickback allegations. Of those, five allege violations of Stark Law.
5. The whistle-blowers in 20 of the 31 cases were current or former employees of the defendant.
