10 healthcare industry lawsuits, settlements

From UPMC settling a whistleblower lawsuit to MultiPlan facing multiple suits over alleged price-fixing, here are 10 lawsuits, settlements and legal developments Becker's has reported since April 29. 

1. Pittsburgh-based UPMC agreed to pay $38 million to settle a whistleblower lawsuit filed against the health system and 13 staff neurosurgeons in 2012. 

2. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems is the latest health system to sue MultiPlan over allegations the data analytics firm conspired with major payers to underpay providers by tens of billions annually.

3. The Fair Political Practices Commission rejected a union's complaint that alleges Bakersfield, Calif.-based Kern County Hospital Authority overpaid its executives through their own private consulting firms.

4. Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare faces a lawsuit alleging its Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health illegally kept pay from at least 1,000 employees. 

5. Jacksonville, Fla.-based Baptist Health agreed to pay $1.5 million to address accusations of breaching the False Claims Act. 

6. Aetna reached a settlement in a case alleging its fertility coverage policies discriminated against LGBTQ+ couples. 

7. Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health is suing Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings, from whom it is attempting to acquire three Connecticut hospitals, as it seeks to get out of the deal.

8. Johnson & Johnson plans to settle 99.75% of claims alleging its talc-based baby powder products led to ovarian cancer. To resolve the lawsuits, Johnson & Johnson will pay $6.45 billion over 25 years. 

9. For $1.1 billion, Philips Respironics will settle personal injury and medical monitoring lawsuits related to the safety of its continuous positive airway pressure machines and respirators. 
10. MultiPlan is facing a lawsuit from Shreveport, La.-based Allegiance Health Management alleging that the company conspired with major payers to underpay providers by tens of billions annually. Payers Health Care Service Corp., Aetna, Elevance, Centene, Cigna, UnitedHealth Humana and Kaiser Permanente are also named as defendants in the suit.
