Las Vegas-based University Medical Center has laid off 105 employees, including nurses, as it plans to close four care centers, according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal report.
Some of UMC's urgent care centers, called UMC Quick Care, have been losing money, which led to the system's decision, according to the report. "With the Affordable Care Act, patients that we had developed programs for basically now have other options, and there is no way we can justify keeping open Quick Cares that are losing millions of dollars," UMC CEO Lawrence Barnard told the Review-Journal.
Additionally, the Quick Care centers will no longer do lab tests because of a lack of reimbursement, according to the report.
Affected employees include registered and licensed practical nurses, pharmacy technicians, lab assistants and radiology technologists, among other positions.
