Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare plans to eliminate 350 jobs through layoffs and attrition, according to a Hartford Courant report.
About 230 employees will be laid off or leave through buyouts and retirement, while the rest of the positions are vacant, according to the report.
Several factors contributed to the decision to cut staff, including lower inpatient volumes and fewer patients with private insurance. In general, the health system is looking to become more efficient, the Courant reported.
"We are focused on creating a more cost-efficient organization," Hartford HealthCare COO Jeffrey Flaks wrote in a note to staff, according to the report. "We have reduced and targeted more than $200 million in non-staff costs…however, we have to ensure that our staff size is appropriate to our patient volume and the current economic conditions."
In 2013, Hartford HealthCare eliminated 179 positions. The system has more than 18,000 employees.
