UPMC backs health data company in $30M investment round

UPMC Enterprises, the venture capital arm of Pittsburgh-based UPMC Health, backed health data company Smile Digital Health in a $30 million series B financing round.

Smile works with vendors and hospitals to build a secure data infrastructure. The company plans to use the funds to explore artificial intelligence and machine learning investments, according to a Jan. 26 Smile news release.

Previously, Smile worked with Astrata, a company created by UPMC Enterprises.

"Our vision for better global health becomes more achievable when we focus on the inherent value of finding innovative ways to efficiently share and use data. Smile Digital Health has seen significant growth in our platform because it does just this," Smile CEO Duncan Weatherston said in the release. "With transformative solutions that can meet companies' specific needs, we are preparing healthcare providers, payers, researchers and life sciences organizations for a connected future that transcends the capabilities of today's systems."
