Virginia system CEO to exit

Mike McDermott, MD, president and CEO of Fredericksburg, Va.-based Mary Washington Healthcare, will depart the two-hospital health system to become president and CEO of Montage Health in Monterey, Calif., according to a Dec. 2 news release shared with Becker's

Christopher Newman, MD, executive vice president, COO and chief medical officer of Mary Washington Healthcare, will helm the organization following Dr. McDermott's departure, the release said. Dr. McDermott will serve as president and CEO into spring 2025.

Dr. McDermott spent nearly two decades practicing at Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg before becoming CEO of Mary Washington Healthcare in 2015. 

"I am extremely proud of everything Mary Washington Healthcare has achieved during my time as CEO and I am confident that under Dr. Newman's leadership, the system will continue to grow and advance," Dr. McDermott said in the release. "It's been an honor and a privilege to lead MWHC for the past 10 years, and I'm excited to watch its progress continue under Chris' leadership."

The release highlights progress in services, facilities and medical staff, including Mary Washington Hospital's establishment as a teaching hospital with its graduate medical education program.

A board-certified internist, Dr. Newman joined Mary Washington Healthcare in 2019, according to his biography.

Before joining Mary Washington Healthcare, he served as chief medical officer for Penn State Health St. Joseph Regional Health Network and led operations for Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health's Medical Group.
