Tampa General Hospital brings AI to the operating room

Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital is rolling out an artificial intelligence platform to make staffing suggestions and predict case durations in the operating room.

The partnership with health tech company Apella will use predictive AI and computer vision to help with scheduling and reduce patient time spent in the surgical suite.

"The technology's ability to look deeper into process efficiencies, predict workflow improvements and find opportunities for quality improvement in our cases are just a few ways we can use this technology to work toward better patient outcomes and improved efficiencies," said Murray Shames, MD, medical chief of staff at Tampa General Hospital, in an Aug. 8 statement.

Apella also started expanding its technology across all 200 operating rooms at Houston Methodist in February.
