Remote psychiatric monitoring tool wins ChristianaCare innovation challenge

A remote monitoring tool for psychiatric patients won the biennial innovation challenge at Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare.

Two psychiatry residents at the health system — Sarah Mooar, MD, and Kathryn Shirley, DO — came up with the idea to fill the gap between the time a patient leaves the inpatient behavioral health unit and begins outpatient care. The digital platform would utilize artificial intelligence and biometric monitoring to keep patients connected to the psychiatric treatment team.

"It's about providing our patients with access to quality care when and where it's needed," Randy Gaboriault, ChristianaCare's chief digital and information officer, said in Oct. 21 system news release. "It's leveraging breakthrough technology, human-centered design and innovative thinking that allows us to make a meaningful impact on an individual’s health and well-being."

Past winners of the health system's innovation challenge include a gaming tool to help neurocognitively impaired patients with recognition and recall, a home healthcare voice assistant (and one of the first HIPAA-eligible Alexa tools) called Home Care Coach, and a care coordination software.
