Boston hospitals, physicians progressing toward ChatGPT's 'holy grail'

Hospitals, physicians and medical educators in Boston are all making use of ChatGPT and its generative artificial intelligence capabilities, the Boston Globe reported.

For instance, Boston interventional radiologist Sahil Mehta, MD, recently used it to craft an appeal for an insurance claim denial, according to the May 30 story.

"While it needed some minor editing, this type of document easily could take 20-30 minutes to write, yet ChatGPT wrote it in a few seconds and required just minor changes," Dr. Mehta told the newspaper. "As this technology evolves, and is better integrated into workflows, it has the ability to significantly improve physician morale, documentation, and patient care because we will spend more time with patients, less with paperwork."

Boston Children's Hospital is also hiring a ChatGPT engineer who will initially help with administrative and financial tasks, such as managing licensing requirements, sorting through job applications, and summarizing medical research, according to the story.

"The holy grail is using these tools to optimize and provide the best possible clinical support to our patients," John Brownstein, PhD, chief innovation officer of Boston Children's, told the newspaper. "But it's also the place we have to take the most time because we have to be the most thoughtful."

MedSchoolCoach, an educational company based in Boston, has also been employing large language models to digest medical textbooks and create study aids for students, according to the news outlet.
