Gadsden (Ala.) Regional Medical Center is using an AI-based maternal warning system to advance patient safety during labor.
The technology, called PeriWatch Vigilance, uses AI and machine learning to monitor maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate, uterine contractions and labor progression, according to a June 10 press release. With the new technology, the hospital's clinicians will be able to identify any concerning developments for faster intervention.
PeriWatch Vigilance can also combine and analyze labor and delivery data for multiple births to identify factors and opportunities for continuous safety and quality improvement.
"While most births happen without complication, there are some inherent risks in the delivery of a newborn," said Xavier Smith, MD, an obstetrician at Gadsden Regional Medical Center and Women's Health Partners. "This new technology adds another layer of protection throughout the labor process to help our maternity team recognize, prevent and respond to avoidable complications."
