NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health has gone a full year without a single catheter-associated urinary tract infection, the hospital said April 30.
The New York City-based hospital reached the achievement after implementing a daily review system and accountability protocols for clinicians. Leaders also attributed their success to heightened care collaboration between physicians and nurses.
"This milestone reflects the tireless devotion to patient safety, adherence to best practices, and the relentless pursuit of nursing excellence," Manjinder Kaur, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, said in an April 30 news release. "By prioritizing patient safety and implementing evidence-based protocols, we have achieved more than just preventing infections. We have significantly enhanced the overall well-being of those under our care."
The milestone comes after NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health recorded two CAUTI cases the year prior. Nationwide, CAUTI rates fell 12% from 2021 to 2022, according to the CDC.
