UPMC Wants West Penn-Highmark Agreement Made Public

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center wants the public to see the details of a proposed pact between Pittsburgh-based Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System, and it has made a federal court filing to move that request forward, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.

The filing was made to a lawsuit West Penn filed two years ago. It originally claimed that UPMC and Highmark were conspiring to push West Penn out of the market. Since Highmark is now in the process of acquiring West Penn, West Penn wants to revise the suit by dropping Highmark and leaving UPMC as the lone conspirator.

Now UPMC says West Penn should disclose its deal with Highmark before a federal judge decides whether or not that original antitrust complaint can be revised.

West Penn has opposed the disclosure of its affiliation with Highmark, requesting the information only be accessibly to involved attorneys and experts because it is "laced with highly sensitive, confidential information," according to the report.

A judge has ordered West Penn to file a response to UPMC's filed objection by noon today.
