Officials at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and St. Vincent Health System, both based in Little Rock, have decided to ditch a potential merger after due diligence revealed neither system could "define a pathway that meets the goals of both institutions," according to an Arkansas News report.
UAMS and St. Vincent have explored a potential affiliation since last year. However, the transaction hit several snags along the way.
In October 2012, Arkansas officials were concerned about the religious issues associated with the deal. UAMS is a public academic medical center, whereas St. Vincent is a Catholic-based health system affiliated with Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives.
