Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care has rejected Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed Health's unsolicited offer to purchase Rex Healthcare, also in Raleigh, for $750 million, according to a Charlotte Observer report.
UNC President Tom Ross issued a statement explaining his decision. According to the report, he said, "In this uncertain healthcare environment, it is critically important that we maintain a long-term vision for the UNC Health Care System that extends beyond the current budget crisis. I do not believe that divesting UNC Health Care of Rex in order to generate one-time revenue for the state is in the long-term best interests of the people of North Carolina, and it would damage our ability to fully carry out our mission."
Mr. Ross said UNC Health Care's three-part mission includes providing high-quality medical care to all North Carolina citizens, conducting cutting-edge research that improves treatment and care and educating the next generation of physicians.
