Rowan University, Rutgers-Camden Merger Moves Forward in Legislature Despite Concerns Over University Hospital

The merger of Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., and Rutgers' campus in Camden, N.J., are moving forward in the state legislature, despite concerns about University Hospital's viability and objections from the academic community, according to a Newsday report.

As part of the merger, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey would be divided, with its medical and dental school becoming part of Rutgers and its osteopathic school going to Rowan.

UMDNJ's University Hospital in Newark would remain largely unaffected and will continue to operate as a non-profit. However, some have voiced concerns over the long-term viability of the safety-net hospital. As a result, amendments have been made to the legislation, including a provision that requires the state to continue to fund University Hospital and its safety-net care, according to the report.

Additional amendments include a provision that would unravel the deal if the osteopathic school were to lose its accreditation.

The bill is expected to be put to a vote in both the state House and Senate on Thursday.
