New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has "enthusiastically endorsed" the idea of a merger that would restructure the state's entire medical education system, according to a Star-Ledger report.
Under the recommendations presented to Gov. Christie yesterday, Rutgers University in New Brunswick would merge with three parts of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey — Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the School of Public Health and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Gov. Christie said he will begin working towards the implementation of the merger immediately, according to the report.
The merger recommendations are only the first part of the advisory board's larger plan, according to the report. The committee is slated to issue a final report soon that will discuss what to do with the remainder of UMDNJ's facilities, including two medical schools and University Hospital in Newark.
