An epidemiologist has filed a civil suit in an attempt to stop the consolidation of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Palmyra Medical Center, both based in Albany, Ga., according to a WALB report.
Under the proposed deal, Phoebe Putney would acquire Palmyra. Corleen Thompson, MSPH, PhD, claims the Hospital Authority of Albany-Dougherty County should only be able to acquire another hospital if the transaction lowers healthcare costs or provides additional facilities, according to the report. Dr. Thompson believes Putney's acquisition of Palmyra will do neither.
Phoebe Putney issued a statement saying the lawsuit is "absurd, baseless, frivolous and brought in bad faith," according to the report.
The sale is currently on hold due to challenges from the Federal Trade Commission.
