North Carolina City Wants Say in Beaufort County Hospital Merger

The city of Washington, N.C., is planning to express its concerns about its future with Beaufort County Medical Center as the hospital begins to select merger partners, according to a Washington Daily News report.

At its meeting on Monday, the city council gave city officials the go ahead to draft a resolution including considerations the city wants hospital decision makers to keep in mind. While some council members are hesitant to get involved in what could be an issue best left for the Beaufort County government and the hospital's governing bodies to handle, other city officials are more concerned about the hospital's future role in the community. The hospital and its accompanying medical community are key players in the Washington economy, and sudden changes could have a negative impact on the city, according to the report.

Beaufort Regional Health System is seeking proposals from 14 potential merger partners, , including Greenville, N.C.-based University Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina and 13 for-profit systems based in Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas, according to the report.
