Texas Sen. Kirk Watson has released his plans for a medical school, teaching hospital, clinics and a healthcare research institute in Austin, Texas, according to an American-Statesman report.
Sen. Watson's push for the projects stems from a general accord among community leaders that Austin, being the second-largest city without a medical school, could serve as a hub for medical training, according to the report.
While the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and Seton have collaborated with the city of Austin to expand training opportunities, others, including the Seton Healthcare Family and St. David's HealthCare have expressed support for a potential medical school for several years already, according to the report.
Sen. Watson said he would create an organizing committee to ensure the goals, particularly the planned medical school, come to fruition. Sen. Watson's proposals are still subject to approval from fellow state lawmakers and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
