Officials are in talks to turn Newark, N.J.'s University Hospital — the state medical school's public teaching hospital — over to private Barnabas Health, according to a Real-Time News report.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, which owns the hospital, and West Orange, N.J.-based Barnabas have signed a confidential disclosure agreement to explore the possibility of an affiliation. According to the report, Barnabas officials have said they expect negotiations to end soon in a proposed takeover agreement.
Union officials are very concerned about the possibility of a private takeover and how it may affect a public university teaching hospital's tenure and academic freedom, among other things.
Others also worry about the deal's unavoidable ripple effects on healthcare in New Jersey. University Hospital is the largest provider of charity care in the state, providing more than $100 million each year, according to the report.
