Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark and Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Jefferson Hills, Pa., have officially finalized their affiliation deal.
Effective today, the 370-bed Jefferson Regional has become the first hospital to join Highmark's integrated delivery system, which has not yet been named. Highmark is still looking to add West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh and St. Vincent Health System in Erie, Pa.
The Orphan's Court of Allegheny County approved Highmark's affiliations with Jefferson Regional and West Penn in February. Highmark's takeover of West Penn still needs approval from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, which expects the deal to cost Highmark $1.6 billion.
