Holy Cross Hospital, Sinai Health Merger Approved by Illinois Health Facilities Board

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board voted unanimously to grant a certificate of need to Holy Cross Hospital and Sinai Health System, both based in Chicago, approving their planned merger.

The hospitals signed a letter of intent to merge in September. In early December, the Vatican approved the transfer of the property — a necessary approval in order for the partnership to proceed.

As a member of Sinai Health System, Holy Cross Hospital will remain a Catholic hospital and fully comply with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Ethical and Religious Directors for Catholic Healthcare, according to the report. The Sisters of St. Casmir will remain the religious sponsors of Holy Cross Hospital.

The transaction is expected to be completed in January 2013.
