A public hearing earlier this week drew more than 1,000 community members, a large majority of whom supported Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center's plan to reopen Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, N.J., according to a Record report.
Hackensack is hoping to reopen the 128-bed hospital, which closed in 2007 after it went bankrupt. Hackensack applied to reopen PVH in June, a move which was opposed by competing The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J., and Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center, which argued the county already has too many vacant hospital beds, according to the report.
The two hospitals appealed to the state Supreme Court to halt the hospital's reopening, but the high court refused in July to hear the case. Now, the fate of the hospital's reopening is in the hands of New Jersey's State Health Planning Board, which is expected to make a recommendation in November.
