Halifax Regional Health System based in South Boston, Va., announced it has signed a definitive agreement to merge with Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Healthcare, expected to be complete July 1.
Halifax has been seeking and evaluating partnership opportunities for the past 18 months in hopes to assist in physician recruitment and retention, as well as infrastructure improvements and economies of scale. It announced its intent to merge with Sentara six months ago and has recently completed its due diligence phase. The merger between the two non-profit systems, pending regulatory approval, is valued at more than $155 million.
Halifax's auxiliary facilities will not be affected by the merger, and the merged entity will continue its relationships with Lynchburg, Va.-based Centra Healthcare and Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Medical Center, according to a report by the Gazette-Virginian.
