A Missouri judge placed an injunction on the proposed sale of North Kansas City Hospital until a lawsuit is resolved determining whether the hospital's city owners have the authority to sell it, according to a report by the Kansas City Star.
At the same time, the Clay County Circuit Court granted the city permission to appoint new trustees to the hospital board.
Conflict has been brewing for months since the city council hired consultants that critics feared were prepping the community hospital for a sale to a for-profit buyer. The council, which voted to consider a sale or merger last June, has denied claims by current board members that it intended to sell to Nashville, Tenn.-based for-profit chain Hospital Corporation of America.
Opponents in the state legislature floated a bill to turn the hospital into a non-profit independent of city control.
