Starke County officials are considering the sale of IU Health Starke Hospital in Knox, Ind., to IU Health LaPorte (Ind.) Hospital, according to a Post-Tribune report.
LaPorte Hospital currently operates Starke Hospital under a lease agreement that was established in 2009. Starke Hospital officials recently requested county officials to consider a sale of the hospital and property to LaPorte Hospital for $1 and a waiver of the 20-year $7.4 million lease. The $7.4 million amount represents Starke Hospital's undepreciated assets when LaPorte began operating the facility.
If LaPorte Hospital does not renew the lease agreement, Starke Hospital would have to cover the $7.4 million cost of the lease, according to the report. Starke Hospital officials, who hope to have the sale finalized by April 2012, say the hospital sale could lead to the construction of a $40 million hospital.
