Cambridge Health Alliance to Discuss Potential Affiliation with Beth Israel Deaconess

Cambridge (Mass.) Health Alliance has entered exclusive talks with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for a potential affiliation, according to a Boston Globe report.

Cambridge Health Alliance operates Cambridge Hospital, Somerville (Mass.) Hospital and Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett, Mass.

Cambridge Health Alliance has been seeking a partnership with a financially stronger hospital system over the past few years. In 2011, Cambridge Health  posted an $8.5 million loss, while Beth Israel Deaconess reported a $62.2 million profit, according to the report.

Patrick Wardell, chief executive of Cambridge Health, said the organizations are investigating clinical, academic and strategic affiliations that could enhance care provided by both institutions. If an agreement is struck, "It will not result in a merger or acquisition nor will it impact [Cambridge Health's] status as a public healthcare provider," he told the Boston Globe.
