St. Louis-based Ascension Health Care Network intends to acquire St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic, N.J., according to a North Jersey report.
St. Mary's has been struggling financially ever since it emerged from bankruptcy in 2010 with the help of $7 million in state aid. An acquisition by Ascension Health, which still needs state and regulatory approval, would convert St. Mary's into a for-profit hospital.
