South Carolina's Loris Healthcare, McLeod Health Put Merger Plans on Hold

Merger discussions between Loris (S.C.) Healthcare and McLeod Health, based in Florence, S.C., have been put on hold for the time being, according to a North Myrtle Beach Times report.

Since Loris is a state-established hospital system, it must get approval from the public before completing a merger.

State Rep. Tracy Edge has drafted legislation that would make it easier for smaller hospitals in the state to merge or expand. The legislation passed the House 109-0 but was held up in the Senate. The current legislative session is slated to end this week, leading to a delay.

Officials have said Loris is not in a dire financial situation, but needs the opportunity to merge or partner to continue proving high-quality care.
