Southwest Washington Medical Center and PeaceHealth Complete Merger

Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Wash., has merged with Bellevue, Wash.-based PeaceHealth, according to a Columbian report.

The medical center will now be the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. As part of the merger, Southwest will follow Catholic-based PeaceHealth's mission: "We carry on the healing mission of Jesus Christ by promoting personal and community health, relieving pain and suffering and treating each person in a loving and caring way." Although Southwest was created as a Catholic hospital, it became a nondenominational community hospital in 1967.

To integrate PeaceHealth's religious mission at Southwest, crosses will be added to patient rooms, the mission will be posted throughout the hospital and Catholic mass will be offered to patients. In addition, employees will be considered caregivers, their job a ministry and the building a sacred place.
