Massachusetts AG Signs Off on Steward Purchase of Morton Hospital, Quincy Medical Center

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley's Office has approved the transfers of Morton Hospital in Taunton and Quincy (Mass.) Medical Center to an affiliate of Steward Health Care System, according to a news release from the AG office.

The AG signed off on the proposed transfer of both hospitals to a for-profit entity, finding the deals met required criteria. As part of the approval process, the AG's Office also improved the original terms of the agreements by installing more safeguards to ensure the transactions are in public interest.

Approval of the Morton transaction will ensure the continuation of a full service acute-care hospital for the residents of Taunton and its surrounding communities, the maintenance of key jobs (Morton currently employs 1,200 people) and the security of the pensions of approximately 1,800 current and former employees.

Approval of the Quincy Medical Center transaction will ensure that the hospital emerges from bankruptcy in the best position to provide Quincy's 92,000 residents with access to a full service acute-care hospital while maintaining key jobs (Quincy Medical Center currently employs 1,100 people).
