Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway said the proposed merger between the University of Louisville (Ky.) Hospital and two systems within Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives needs approval from Gov. Steve Beshear as well as the state's Finance and Administration Cabinet, according to a Courier-Journal report.
Gov. Beshear later called for several discussions among the leaders involved in the deal, saying the public mission of University Hospital must be honored, the report said. University Hospital would potentially merge with Louisville, Ky.-based Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare as well as Lexington, Ky.-based Saint Joseph Health System. Both are a part of CHI, and the deal has caused controversy regarding the implications of reproductive and end-of-life care.
According to the report, Mr. Conway also informed the Federal Trade Commission of the decision.
