Boston-based Caritas Christi Healthcare has announced plans to convert Woonsocket, R.I.'s Landmark Medical Center into a Catholic facility if its agreement to acquire the hospital is approved by a Rhode Island judge and state regulators, according to a Boston Globe report.
The conversion would prohibit Landmark from continuing to provide sterilization services, such as tubal ligation, in compliance with the rules governing Catholic healthcare organizations.
Caritas officials said the move to convert Landmark into a Catholic hospital could set an example for other community hospitals that may join the system, according to the report.
