Police are investigating whether a 40-year-old medical researcher, whose body was found in an eighth-floor bathroom of New York City-based NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center Sunday, suffered a fatal overdose, New York Daily News reports.
Authorities discovered Miguel Crespo, PhD, unconscious on the bathroom floor at the hospital just before 3 p.m. Sunday.
While investigators previously said they found vomit near Dr. Crespo's body, police sources said they also found aluminum foil and a pen cap, materials that may be used to snort certain types of drugs, the report states.
The New York City medical examiner reportedly examined Dr. Crespo's body Monday and said further examination is necessary to determine his exact cause of death. Police reportedly do not suspect foul play, according to the report.
Dr. Crespo was hired to conduct medical research at New York City-based Weill Cornell Medical College in 2011, according to his LinkedIn profile.
In a statement to Becker's Hospital Review Monday, a spokesperson for NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center said, "Weill Cornell Medicine is saddened by the death of our colleague Miguel Crespo, PhD. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends."
