Patient privacy concerns stall UCSD's physician review launch

University of California San Diego Health decided to put its launch of online physician reviews on hold for three to six months when it realized it didn't disclose to patients that their comments would be published publicly, according to a report from KPBS.

The two-hospital, 500-physician system was all set to roll out patient-written critiques and star reviews of its physicians, but felt it would be unfair to patients to publish the information without first notifying them that their comments would be public, according to the report.

The reviews do not include patient names, but patients could have included other personal information, that taken together could identify them. The system is redistributing patient surveys with a disclosure statement for extra precaution and courtesy, according to the report.
