New Allegheny Health Network Sees Surge of Interest From UPMC Physicians

The CMO from West Penn Allegheny Health System has said a significant number of physicians from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have expressed interest in working for the newly formed Allegheny Health Network, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report.

Allegheny Health Network is the health system born from Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark's acquisition of West Penn. The deal just received regulatory approval on Monday.

CMO Tony Farah, MD, told the Pittsburgh Business Times that the "number of UPMC physicians who would like to join us far outnumber the number we need right now," according to the report.

Two hundred physicians were hired for AHN during the Pennsylvania Insurance Department's 18-month review of the Highmark-West Penn deal, according to the report. The acquisition was a centerpiece to Highmark's strategy to develop an integrated health network to better compete with UPMC.

A UPMC spokesperson said the system employs about 3,400 physicians, which is roughly 4 percent more than last year. But the system also recently announced a 75-percent decline in its hiring of all employees this year.
