Match Day 2017 recap: 8 things to know

A record-breaking 31,757 residency positions were offered to 35,969 U.S. and international medical school candidates during the 2017 Main Residency Match Friday, the most positions to be offered in the program's history.

"We are honored to be part of this life-changing event for young physicians and we wish them success in their residency training," said National Residency Match Program President and CEO Mona Signer.

Here are eight things to know about Match Day 2017.

1. First-year internal medicine programs across the U.S. offered 7,233 positions in total, roughly 209 more than in 2016. U.S. allopathic medical school seniors filled 3,245 (44.9 percent) of positions offered.

2. This year, family medicine residency programs offered a total of 3,356 positions, 118 more than in 2016. U.S. allopathic medical school students filled 1,513 (45.1 percent) of positions offered.

3. Pediatrics residency programs throughout the U.S. offered 2,738 positions in total, up from the 2,689 positions offered in 2016. U.S. medical school seniors filled 1,849 (67.5 percent) of positions offered.

4. Emergency medicine residency programs offered 2,047 first-year positions and filled all but six. The number of programs offered increased by 379 positions (23 percent) since 2012.

5. The NRMP program attributed the growth in the number of Match registrants to an increase in the number of U.S. medical school students and graduates in recent years.

6. This year, 19,030 U.S. allopathic medical school seniors registered for Match Day, roughly 362 more students than in 2016. Of those who participated, 18,539 (97.42 percent) of students submitted program choices and 17,480 (94.3 percent) of students were matched with first-year positions.

7. The number of U.S. citizen international medical school students and graduates who submitted program choices dropped to 5,069 students, down from 5,323 in 2016. However, 2,777 (54.8 percent) were matched with at least one postgraduate year-one program position, the highest match rate since 2004.

8. The number of non-U.S. citizen candidates who submitted program choices also declined to 7,284 positions from 7,460 positions in 2016. Approximately 3,814 (52.4 percent) of applicants were matched with at least one first-year program position, up 45 applicants from 2016, the highest match rate since 2005.
