Legislation Would Up Medicare-Supported Residency Positions

Bills have been introduced in the House and Senate that would up add Medicare-supported physician residency positions to programs across the country, according to AHA News Now and Association of American Medical Colleges reports.

The House bill, the "Training Tomorrow's Doctors Today Act," was introduced by Reps. Arron Shock (R-Ill.) and Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.). It would increase the number of Medicare-supported graduate medical education residency positions by 15,000 over five years. It would also establish accountability and transparency measures, according to the AAMC.

The bill in the Senate, S.577, was reintroduced by Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Harry Reid (D-Nev.). It would also up the number of GME positions by 15,000, according to AHA.

The number of residency positions has been frozen at the 1996 level since 1997 due to The Balanced Budget Act of 1997, according to the reports.
