Two congressmen have reintroduced a bill that would create pilot projects to test community-based primary care training models, according to an AAFP News Now report.
The Primary Care Workforce Access Improvement Act of 2013 would allow part of graduate medical education payments to go directly to residency programs that are community-based. The programs would collaborate with area hospitals to fully train primary care providers.
Currently, GME funding goes directly to hospitals and does not support training in non-hospital settings, according to the report, even though 90 percent of primary care is provided outside of hospitals.
Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) reintroduced the bipartisan bill this year.
