Numerous hospitals rolled out new physician residency programs this year to create more training opportunities for students after medical school and expand the pipeline of future physicians.
Here are 22 such programs launched in 2022:

- Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in Fairborn, Ohio, received accreditation for a new rural family residency program, the university said Nov. 22. The medical school is partnering with Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, for the program.
- The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock and Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Ark., launched a new internal medicine residency, the organizations said Nov. 7.
- Doylestown (Pa.) Health is launching a family medicine residency program, the health system said Nov. 1.
- Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., is developing an emergency medicine residency program, the organization said Oct. 31.
- St. Luke’s Health-Memorial Lufkin (Texas) and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston established a rural health residency program, The Lufkin Daily News reported Oct. 8.
- Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health will create a family medicine rural residency training program at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Calif., the health system said Oct. 4.
- Pullman (Wash.) Regional Hospital launched a new family medical residency program with Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine in Spokane, Wash., The Lewiston Tribune reported Sept. 23.
- The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Reno-based Renown Health announced the accreditation of a new three-year pediatrics residency program Sept. 22.
- St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, La., earned accreditation for a new internal medicine residency set to begin in July 2023, The Ouachita Citizen reported Sept. 21.
- Burgaw, N.C.-based Black River Health Services launched a rural family medicine residency program, North Carolina Health News reported Sept. 20.
- St. David's North Austin (Texas) Medical Center launched an obstetrics-gynecology residency program, Austin American Statesman reported Aug. 31.
- HCA Florida Capital Hospital in Tallahassee and University of Central Florida College of Medicine launched a psychiatry residency program, ABC affiliate WTXL reported July 12.
- Summerville (S.C.) Medical Center launched an obstetrics-gynecology residency program under Charleston, S.C.-based Trident Health, which also launched a general surgery residency program, July 1, The Post and Courier reported July 4.
- Portland, Ore.-based Legacy Health launched an internal medicine residency program in partnership with Vancouver (Wash.) Clinic, The Columbian reported June 28.
- The University of Central Florida in Orlando and Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare began their general surgery residency program, the university said April 19.
- OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, Ill., created a family medicine residency program, The Pantagraph reported April 12.
- Winnsboro, La.-based Franklin Medical Center is launching a family medical practice residency program in partnership with Louisiana State University Health Shreveport, The Franklin Sun reported April 6.
- Asheville, N.C.-based Mountain Area Health Education Center is launching the state's first addiction psychiatry residency program, NC Health News reported March 15.
- Chicago-based Rush University is launching a family medicine residency in collaboration with Esperanza Health Centers, the organization said March 8.
- Oxnard, Calif.-based St. John's Regional Medical Center is launching a residency program to support Black physicians, Thousand Oaks Acorn reported March 4.
- Petoskey-based McLaren Northern Michigan is launching a new residency program to begin by 2023, UpNorthLive reported March 3.
- Cape Coral, Fla.-based Lee Health is launching an internal medicine residency program, NBC2 News reported Jan. 12.
