The CEO of two Michigan hospitals — St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Joseph Mercy Livingston — prefers to hear about and witness the patient experience in his facilities' hallways, Crain's Detroit Business reports.
CEO David Brooks said walking the halls and communicating with patients, families and hospital staff is one of things he enjoys most about his job. And it is something he continued from his previous position as president of Detroit-based St. John Hospital and Medical Center.
"It is the coolest and easiest thing I get to do here. It's fun," Mr. Brooks told Crain's Detroit Business.
In addition to talking to patients, Mr. Brooks uses formal patient and employee satisfaction surveys to better understand the environment he is running.
"Leadership involves listening just as much as making decisions," Mr. Brooks said, according to the report.
