Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., laid off 125 people with administrative and patient care roles in the hospital, according to a Journal News report.
Most employees handled phone calls and paperwork, while a smaller number were directly involved in patient care, mainly in the emergency department. Hospital officials have said this round of layoffs is the final step of a plan to outsource support services to private company Medical Staff Network.
Laid-off employees are able to apply for jobs with MSN, but several have expressed reluctance to do so as the private company does not offer benefits and would pay half of their former salary, according to the report.
