Mass layoffs in the hospital industry nearly doubled in June, as they jumped from 11 in May to 20, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
June's 20 mass layoffs are also a sharp increase from the same month last year — June 2011 only recorded 8 mass layoffs, which affected roughly 441 people.
In June, hospital layoffs affected at least 1,497 people — a spike from May's 765 initial unemployment claimants.
