WakeMed Requests Financial Records on UNC Health, Claims System Duplicates Services

Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed Health & Hospitals has filed a public records request for documents related to UNC Health Care, Rex Healthcare and other subsidiaries, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

WakeMed claims the UNC system is creating "unfair competition" by duplicating high revenue-generating services. WakeMed also claims it provides a disproportionate amount of charity care when compared to UNC. WakeMed provides 80 percent of charity care in Wake County, according to the report.

"Any time we see a non-profit organization doing very little non-profit work and being subsidized by state money, it's time to call attention to that," said WakeMed CEO Bill Atkinson.
