Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport, Calif., has notified its 300 employees of an immediate 10 percent workforce reduction, according to a Lake County News report.
The layoffs stem from the hospital's financial difficulties. Chief Administrative Officer Siri Nelson said net revenue has decreased in the past four years, falling from $5.5 million per month in 2007 to $4.8 million a month for the first two months of 2012. At the same time, operating costs have continued to rise.
"We have come to the tough, but unavoidable conclusion that the only way to achieve the significant cost savings necessary is through staff reductions," Ms. Nelson said in the report.
The reduction is expected to occur across all areas of the hospital.
