Study: Retail Clinic Utilization by Insured on the Rise

A recent study published online by the American Journal of Managed Care found that retail clinic use by insured patients has increased ten-fold from 2007 to 2009.

Researchers analyzed insurance claims from 2007 to 2009 for 11 simple acute conditions commonly treated at retail clinics from 13.3 million people enrolled in Aetna health plans, according to a report on the study by American Medical News.

The study discovered that retail clinic use dramatically increased between 2007 and 2009. In 2009, 6.9 percent of all visits for the 11 simple acute conditions occurred at a retail clinic. Researchers found that patients who resided within one mile from a retail clinic were 7.5 percent more likely to use a retail clinic than patients who lived 10 to 20 miles away. Additionally, patients with a high income were more likely to use retail clinics.
