Protestors, in remembrance of a youth killed in a drive-by shooting last year, gathered outside University of Chicago Medical Center earlier this week, urging the hospital to reopen its trauma center, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report.
The hospital closed its trauma center in 1988 for financial reasons. Currently, the city has four trauma centers but none are close to the South Side community. According to the news report, the deceased youth was three blocks from the medical center when he was shot and had to be transported nine miles away to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Hospital officials said operating an expensive trauma unit would necessitate cuts to other medical offerings.
