Unionized nurses at New York City's Montefiore Medical Center have announced their intent to strike on Jan. 10 unless management and union representatives come to an agreement over staffing levels and salaries, according to a New York Times report.
According to the report, the hospital and union agreed to change staffing levels from one nurse for every seven patients to one nurse for every six patients in medical and surgical units.
However, hospital management was unwilling to meet the union's demand for new nurses and staffing levels in the labor and delivery and emergency departments. Unionized nurses were also unable to accept the hospital's offer of a 7.5 percent wage increase over four years.
Under federal law, hospitals must be given at least 10 days notice of nurses' intent to strike. The announcement of the planned strike at Montefiore comes shortly after St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and Mount Sinai Medical Center, also in New York City, reached tentative labor agreements with the nurses' union.
