Novant Health to Trim 289 Jobs

Novant Health, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., has announced plans to cut 289 positions with 82 of those coming from management, according to a Charlotte Observer report.

About 22 percent of the cuts will affect the 13-hospital system's clinical staff, including nurses and others involved in care delivery. A Novant spokesperson said those clinical cuts will not affect nurse-to-patient ratios, however, and that 10 to 15 percent of laid-off employees may find other jobs within the system.

Novant has roughly 25,000 employees, not including the planned cuts, and system officials say the cutbacks are due to the recent recession, increased charity care and declining reimbursement.
