Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., has announced it will lay off 250 employees and cut 104 vacant jobs, according to a Journal News report.
Hospital officials said the lay offs and job cuts were necessary in light of its $61 million budget shortfall next year. The layoffs affect 132 nurses, 105 Civil Service Employee Association workers and 13 managers.
The announcement comes shortly after unionized nurses at Westchester Medical Center declared a deadlock in their contract talks with hospital management. The nurses' most recent five-year contract expired March 31.
